The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a student of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, identified as Koya Ayodeji, for allegedly stabbing his roommate, Ayobami Ajayi, during a heated argument. The incident, which occurred on the university campus, has sparked concern among students and the broader community.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Command detailed the circumstances leading to the altercation. It stated that the 25-year-old suspect, a 5th-year Business Education student, stabbed his roommate, Ayobami Ajayi, who is a 3rd-year Mass Communication student, in the lower abdomen during a dispute over alleged noise from Ajayi’s room.
According to the police, Ayodeji had been acting erratically and was reportedly under the influence of drugs at the time of the incident. The Command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, explained that Ayodeji confronted Ajayi, asking him to lower the noise emanating from his room. However, when his request was allegedly ignored, the disagreement escalated, leading to the violent act.
Witnesses reported that in a fit of anger, Ayodeji picked up a knife and stabbed Ajayi in the lower abdomen, inflicting a severe injury. Following the attack, Ajayi was immediately rushed to the Ogun State University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu, where medical personnel promptly attended to him. Doctors have since described his condition as stable, providing some relief to those concerned about his well-being.
The statement from the police further noted that Ayodeji’s behavior had raised suspicions among his peers prior to the altercation, as he was reportedly displaying signs of aggression and irrationality. The Command assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure justice is served.
Meanwhile, the university authorities have also expressed their commitment to addressing the situation. They have called for calm among students, urging them to refrain from actions that could escalate tensions on campus. This incident has highlighted the need for increased awareness about substance abuse and mental health support for students within the academic community.
