A fatal accident on the Third Mainland Bridge has tragically claimed the life of one person and left four others injured. The incident occurred earlier today, sparking widespread concern and raising further questions about road safety on one of Lagos's busiest bridges. The accident involved a J5 Ford bus and a Mercedes truck and took place at Ilubirin, heading inward Sura, along the Lagos Third Mainland Bridge.
Gistreel reports that the collision took place on Monday morning, causing a significant traffic disruption as emergency services rushed to the scene. In a statement confirming the tragic incident, Adebayo Taofiq, Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), disclosed that the accident left one person dead and five individuals affected in total. The accident occurred in a high-traffic area, making the rescue and recovery efforts particularly challenging.
According to Taofiq’s statement, LASTMA officials, led by General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki, responded quickly to the scene. Upon arrival, they immediately began rescue operations to extricate those trapped inside the wreckage. The efforts were supported by concerned bystanders, who worked together with the rescue teams to pull the victims from the vehicles. Fortunately, four people were freed from the wreckage, and three of them survived the incident. However, the driver of the J5 Ford bus, which was carrying a load of pepper and other perishable goods, tragically lost their life after succumbing to injuries sustained in the crash.
The surviving victims were immediately transported to the General Hospital on Lagos Island for urgent medical attention. The authorities have not yet released further details about the condition of those injured, but they are expected to receive appropriate care as they recover from the traumatic experience. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, and authorities are expected to provide additional updates as they gather more information.
This tragic incident has once again highlighted the dangers on the Third Mainland Bridge, a vital thoroughfare in Lagos. LASTMA has reiterated its commitment to ensuring road safety, urging motorists to remain cautious and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent such accidents in the future. The authority has also expressed its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and reassured the public that every effort is being made to improve safety measures on major roads in Lagos.
