President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday extended his heartfelt congratulations to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on his successful re-election at the Ondo State Governorship election held on Saturday, November 16, 2024.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the President applauded the peaceful and orderly conduct of the election process, attributing the civility and transparency to the commitment and maturity demonstrated by the candidates of the 17 political parties and their supporters during the campaigns and election day.
President Tinubu encouraged candidates who were dissatisfied with the election results to seek redress through the appropriate judicial mechanisms, emphasizing the importance of respecting democratic principles and institutions to resolve any disputes amicably and lawfully.
The President specifically lauded the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its commendable performance in organizing a credible election. He highlighted the commission's early preparations, efficient deployment of staff and election materials, and seamless handling of the electoral process. According to the President, these efforts reaffirmed the trust of the Nigerian people in INEC’s capacity to manage elections effectively.
Tinubu noted with satisfaction that INEC successfully uploaded over 98 per cent of the election results on the same day, reflecting the progress made in ensuring electoral transparency and timeliness.
In addition to recognizing INEC's achievements, President Tinubu expressed his appreciation to the Nigerian Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), the Nigerian military, and other security agencies for their professional conduct in maintaining peace and security throughout the electoral process.
He further commended the citizens of Ondo State for their peaceful participation in the democratic process, describing their conduct as a significant contribution to the advancement of democracy in Nigeria.
President Tinubu reiterated his belief that the Ondo State Governorship election was a litmus test of Nigeria’s democratic and institutional growth. He affirmed that the successful outcome of the election was a testament to the collective commitment of stakeholders to uphold the principles of free, fair, and credible elections in the country.
The President expressed his optimism that the exemplary conduct demonstrated during the election would extend to post-election activities, including governance and political interactions, fostering unity and development in Ondo State.
Governor Aiyedatiwa’s re-election was marked by his ability to secure widespread support, demonstrating the trust and confidence the people of Ondo State have in his leadership and vision for progress. The President called on all political actors to join hands in moving the state forward for the benefit of its residents.
