Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo sociocultural organization, has expressed its unreserved support for President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reforms, describing them as a strategic and beneficial move for the Igbo people and the broader Nigerian populace.
In a statement released on Sunday by its Secretary General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the group explained that after a thorough review of the proposed tax reforms and consultations with relevant stakeholders, they have concluded that these reforms will bring significant advantages to Nigerian workers, enhance the growth of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), and address the problem of double taxation that has hampered economic progress for years.
Ohanaeze highlighted the importance of the reforms in tackling systemic inefficiencies within the Nigerian tax structure, ensuring that workers and businesses thrive under an equitable economic system.
The group also raised concerns about the backlash the reforms have received, particularly from the Northern region. According to Ohanaeze, such opposition stems from fears of losing certain illegal gains that the proposed laws aim to eliminate.

In their statement, the group outlined the following: “Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the Igbo apex sociocultural organization representing the collective interests of the Igbo nation, proudly announces its firm support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s proposed Tax Reforms Bills.
“This decision follows a rigorous process of evaluation, extensive consultations with diverse stakeholders, and a careful analysis of the potential impacts of these bills on Nigeria’s economic landscape.
“Our analysis confirms that these tax reforms transcend ordinary legislative adjustments; they are a revolutionary initiative designed to rejuvenate Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and uplift the living conditions of Nigerian workers. By addressing the long-standing issue of double taxation, often perpetuated by certain state governors, these reforms will create an enabling business environment that fosters fairness and encourages both local and foreign investments.
“The Igbo people, widely recognized for their entrepreneurial zeal and unwavering pursuit of economic self-reliance, are poised to benefit significantly from these reforms. The measures proposed will bolster the private sector and ensure the continued success of Igbo entrepreneurs, who play a central role in propelling Nigeria’s economy through dynamic SME activities.
“As advocates for economic progress, we view these reforms as a vital step toward achieving a more inclusive and prosperous Nigerian economy, aligning with the aspirations of all industrious citizens.”
Ohanaeze concluded by urging all Nigerians, especially the legislative arm of government, to support the reforms, emphasizing their transformative potential to drive the country toward sustainable economic growth while safeguarding the interests of its citizens.
