Peter Obi has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Federal Commissioner for Information and South South Leader, Chief Edwin Clark, describing him as a patriot who wholeheartedly loved, lived, and died for Nigeria. Obi paid tribute to the late elder statesman, acknowledging his unwavering dedication to the country and his tireless advocacy for justice, equity, and good governance.

The Labour Party (LP) Presidential Candidate in the 2023 general elections, in a heartfelt statement issued on Tuesday, praised Clark for being a fearless voice for justice and a relentless fighter for a better Nigeria. He emphasized that the nation is gradually losing the courageous voices of individuals who put their lives and personal interests on the line to demand fairness and accountability from those in power.

Peter Obi urged Nigerian leaders to learn from the exemplary qualities of the late statesman, particularly his dedication to truth, justice, and national unity. He noted that Chief Edwin Clark was never afraid to speak up, even when it came at great personal cost, and he remained committed to the vision of a "New Nigeria" built on fairness and good governance.

Reflecting on Chief Edwin Clark’s life and legacy, Obi stated, “Let me first and foremost thank God Almighty, who has called him home. I am confident that He will grant him eternal rest and give us the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss, while continuing to bless and strengthen his family.”

Speaking further, Obi highlighted Clark’s undying love for Nigeria and his dedication to the nation’s progress. “He lived and died for Nigeria. He loved Nigeria, and he consistently preached and fought for better governance in Nigeria, one that is anchored on justice, equity, and care for all its citizens.”

Obi lamented the gradual disappearance of strong and fearless voices who championed justice and fairness, stating that their absence is leaving a significant void in the country’s quest for genuine transformation. “Like I mentioned earlier, we are fast losing the voices—those strong voices that were able to fight for justice, even at the risk of their lives and at the cost of losing everything,” he said.

“These were people who refused to be compromised in their pursuit of truth and justice. For us who are still alive, it has become imperative that if we truly desire a better Nigeria, we must adopt their way of life, uphold their values, and continue their struggles.”

Obi further described Chief Edwin Clark as a man of deep convictions who never wavered in his beliefs. “He was someone who stood firmly for whatever he believed in and fought tirelessly for it. He strongly advocated for one Nigeria, a united and just nation where fairness prevails. Those of us who remain must take up the mantle and continue his fight.”
