Former President Olusegun Obasanjo recently opened up about his experiences during his time in prison, fondly recalling the instrumental role played by his late wife, Stella Obasanjo, in securing his eventual release. Obasanjo shared these heartfelt memories during the inauguration ceremony of the new 250-bed Stella Obasanjo Hospital in Benin City, the capital of Edo State. He praised Stella’s determination and courage, acknowledging her efforts as a significant factor in his release and subsequent political journey.

Obasanjo was imprisoned during the military regime of General Sani Abacha, facing accusations of involvement in a coup plot. Following Abacha’s unexpected death, the administration of General AbdulSalam Abubakar ultimately granted Obasanjo freedom, a turning point that paved the way for him to become Nigeria’s president. His release is often credited, in part, to the relentless advocacy and support he received from his late wife, Stella, who made continuous efforts to appeal for his freedom on both domestic and international levels.

Stella Obasanjo, a native of Edo State, dedicated herself to campaigning for her husband’s release, and after his return, she went on to serve as Nigeria’s First Lady. Tragically, she passed away during Obasanjo’s second presidential term. In his speech, the 87-year-old former president expressed his deep appreciation for Stella’s unwavering support, sharing how she tirelessly advocated for him. He noted, “My late wife went everywhere to ensure that I came out of prison alive. She traveled to Vatican City, France, and other parts of the world, fighting for my freedom. I had it all coming out of prison.”

Obasanjo continued, “No amount of honour would be too much for the role she played.” He went on to express profound gratitude for the naming of the new hospital in her memory, recognizing this as a fitting tribute to her legacy and commitment. Reflecting further on Stella’s impact, he said, “I had a woman who made tremendous contributions to my achievements in public life.”

Obasanjo also took a moment to commend the Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, acknowledging his role in the creation and completion of the Stella Obasanjo Hospital. He praised Obaseki’s dedication to the healthcare project, noting that the governor had demonstrated a strong commitment by “starting and finishing well” in office. Obasanjo also took time to reminisce about his previous collaborations with former Governor John Odigie Oyegun, describing Oyegun as a distinguished permanent secretary with whom he had shared meaningful experiences in service to the country.

The former president also emphasized the quality of care the new hospital promises to deliver. “With this hospital, you’re assured of first-class treatment for any ailment,” he stated. “More grace to the elbows of the governor. With this kind of edifice, I can say that the governor started well and is finishing well.” Obasanjo’s remarks highlighted his appreciation for both his late wife’s legacy and the ongoing dedication of Edo State’s leaders in supporting public health and honoring Stella’s memory.
