Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has dismissed rumours circulating on social media that he had passed away, confirming that he is alive and well. The false rumours, which emerged online, caused a stir, with many social media users believing the unfounded reports. Obasanjo expressed his disbelief and disappointment at the distressing news, which he said deeply upset both him and his family.
Obasanjo spoke publicly about the rumours during the commissioning of the Old-Garage-Oke-Fia-Lameco road project in Osun State, an event attended by Governor Ademola Adeleke. While speaking in Yoruba, he addressed the matter directly, saying, “I heard the rumour that I was dead. I saw it on the social media. I quickly told my children and my relations that it was not true and that I was alive. Those who want me dead, that is their wish but God still keeps me alive.”
He further questioned the motivations behind spreading such malicious rumours, asking, “Why would anyone wish me dead? Those who harbour such thoughts will not escape tragedy themselves.” In his remarks, Obasanjo also expressed his frustration with the way technology is sometimes misused, stating that spreading such unfounded and harmful rumours is not only disturbing but unacceptable. He emphasized that such behaviour is a sign of the troubling extent to which technology can be abused in modern times.
