The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) [/b]has rejected the recently approved 50% telecom tariff hike by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), arguing that the increase would place an undue financial strain on Nigerians, already struggling with rising costs of living. Instead, the NLC has proposed a more reasonable 5% hike, which they believe would be less burdensome for citizens while still addressing any potential industry concerns.[/p>
Sunrise Daily on Thursday, NLC spokesperson Benson Upah vehemently criticized the proposed tariff hike, describing it as an unnecessary financial burden on the average Nigerian. He called on the government and regulatory bodies to reconsider the move, emphasizing that the cumulative impact of rising taxes and tariffs could push citizens to their breaking point. “They keep strangling us with senseless taxes. There will come a time when people, even if they can afford to pay, will refuse to do so. This protest is to stop this reckless tariff increase. If any increase is necessary at all, it should be capped at 5%, considering the numerous price hikes across various sectors,” Upah said. His remarks highlighted the growing frustration among Nigerians who are already facing hardships due to inflation and the rising cost of basic goods and services.[/p>
