The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the successful arrest of nine suspects involved in the kidnapping and brutal murder of Justice Azuka, a lawmaker representing Onitsha North 1 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly. The shocking murder case has sent waves of concern throughout the region, highlighting the growing security challenges in the state.
Justice Azuka was tragically abducted on December 24, 2024, while traveling along Ugwunaobankpa Road in Inland Town, Onitsha. His abduction sparked an immediate search by local authorities, who launched an intense investigation to locate him. Sadly, his body was found on Thursday morning, abandoned near the Second Niger Bridge, in a state of severe decomposition, which pointed to the horrific nature of the crime.
The gruesome discovery of Azuka's lifeless body in such a manner shocked not only his family and constituents but also the entire state. The killing raised serious concerns about the safety of public officials in Anambra State. The tragic incident garnered widespread media attention, with many expressing their disbelief and calling for swift justice for the slain lawmaker.
In a statement released on Friday, the Commissioner of Police for Anambra State, Nnaghe Itam, addressed the press, confirming that a joint security team had been on a mission to rescue the lawmaker during the time of his death. Through coordinated intelligence operations and an extensive manhunt, the police were able to apprehend nine suspects directly linked to the crime.
“Through intelligence-led operations, security operatives swiftly apprehended nine suspects believed to be directly involved in the crime,” Commissioner Itam stated, providing further details on the arrests and operations. He emphasized that the security forces had worked diligently to ensure justice for the slain lawmaker and bring the perpetrators to justice.
As part of the operation, police officers recovered two pump-action guns from the suspects. In a dramatic turn of events, one suspect sustained a gunshot wound during an exchange of gunfire with security personnel. Despite the exchange, all nine individuals were taken into custody, and investigations continue to uncover further details surrounding the crime.
