The Lagos State House of Assembly has strongly condemned the unauthorized entry of suspended Clerk, Olalekan Onafeko, into the Assembly premises, describing his actions as a serious security breach and a blatant violation of legislative protocol.
According to reports, Kabir Kushoro, the Chief Security Officer of the Assembly, confirmed the incident in an official statement issued on Wednesday in Lagos. He stated that Onafeko’s sudden arrival at the complex with unidentified individuals caused a disruption, prompting security concerns among lawmakers and staff.
It will be recalled that Onafeko was suspended on January 13, 2025, by a two-thirds majority of the House over allegations of financial misconduct. Following his suspension, Speaker Mojisola Meranda appointed Babatunde Ottun as the Acting Clerk of the House. However, the National Industrial Court in Lagos overturned Onafeko’s suspension last Thursday, ordering his immediate reinstatement as the substantive Clerk.
In a court case identified as NICN/LA/23/2025, Onafeko had sought an interim injunction to prevent the Lagos Assembly from appointing a replacement until the court could determine his interlocutory injunction request. The presiding judge, Justice M. N. Esowe, ruled in his favor and issued an ex parte order barring Babatunde Ottun from acting as Clerk.
“The parties shall maintain peace and status quo ante bellum until the motion on notice is heard and determined,” the judge ruled.
Despite the court order, Kushoro alleged that Onafeko arrived at the Assembly complex on Wednesday morning with a group of unknown individuals and deliberately blocked the staff entrance with his vehicle, causing disruptions to official activities.
Kushoro emphasized that this act of defiance was a direct challenge to the authority of the House leadership, warning that appropriate measures would be taken to prevent further security breaches.
“This act of defiance constitutes a clear disregard for legislative protocols and security regulations,” Kushoro stated.
“The House leadership views this action as an affront to the institution’s integrity and will take all necessary steps to uphold discipline and order.”
He further revealed that Onafeko attempted to force his way into the Clerk’s office, prompting security personnel to intervene. According to Kushoro, law enforcement agencies have been alerted about the situation, and steps are being taken to ensure that order is maintained within the Assembly complex.
“Onafeko has a pending suit against the Assembly, the Acting Clerk, and the State Government. He should focus on the legal process instead of disrupting Assembly activities,” he added.
As tensions rise within the Lagos Assembly over the Clerk’s position, lawmakers and political observers are closely monitoring the unfolding situation to see how the House leadership will respond to this development.
