A Nigerian lawyer has taken to social media to express deep concern over what appears to be a significant legal anomaly, involving a man who is currently facing trial for a serious crime.
In a detailed post shared on X, formerly Twitter, the lawyer described an unusual and perplexing scenario that unfolded in a courtroom. According to him, a man who had been arrested in connection with an armed robbery case that occurred in 2020, and had remained in prison since then, was suddenly named as a prime suspect in a murder case that took place in Yaba in 2022.
The lawyer went on to explain that when the suspect was questioned about the murder charge, he firmly maintained his innocence, emphasizing that it would have been physically impossible for him to commit the crime since he had been incarcerated at the time of the alleged offense. His defense was straightforward—he had been locked away in prison since 2020, making it impossible for him to have been involved in any crime outside the correctional facility.
The courtroom was reportedly thrown into a state of confusion, with even the presiding judge appearing baffled by the apparent contradiction. How could the same individual be implicated in an offense that took place at a time when he was already behind bars? The lawyer’s post raised serious questions about potential errors, corruption, or deliberate attempts to frame the suspect for a crime he did not commit.
Providing further details, the lawyer wrote: “Something highly unusual happened in court yesterday. A man who has been standing trial for an armed robbery incident that took place in 2020 in Lagos Island was also named as a suspect in a 2022 murder case in Sabo, Yaba. The entire courtroom, including the judge, was left in shock—how could it be possible for the same individual to have committed both crimes?”
“The alleged murder reportedly took place in Yaba while he was still in prison, making it logically impossible for him to be involved. However, his name and even his passport photograph appeared in the information sheet presented to the court. When confronted with the accusation, he strongly denied any involvement, reiterating that his only known crime was the armed robbery charge in Lagos Island.”
The lawyer’s revelation quickly gained widespread attention online, with social media users expressing disbelief, outrage, and concern. Many took to the comment section to share their thoughts and suspicions regarding how such a bizarre mix-up could have happened.
See some reactions from concerned individuals below:
@oluwatunmilara1: “How could something like this even happen? Someone needs to investigate this case and find out who is trying to frame this man for a crime he could not have committed. This is very suspicious.”
@AyanniyiNoah: “WON TI REPLACE ORUKO PELU ORUKO AUTHENTIC ODARAN. This means that someone else’s name has been swapped with the real criminal’s. The true culprit is probably walking free right now while this innocent man is being charged for a crime he didn’t commit.”
@EsugbayiEleko: “While it seems unbelievable, there is still a possibility that someone in prison could conspire to commit a crime outside. If the suspect had outside connections, he could have orchestrated the murder from behind bars. We don’t know the full facts yet.”
@BObinrin: “This reminds me of a similar case. A man I know was sentenced to 15 years for something he didn’t do. He was just a school bus driver, sitting in his bus, waiting to pick up students, when the police suddenly arrested him. They claimed he was involved in a robbery the night before. He kept saying he was innocent, but he had no one to fight for him.”
@opemarkin: “The police officers handling this case need to be questioned immediately. This doesn’t make sense. Can there be any institution more corrupt than the Nigerian police? This is pure injustice.”
@NurdeanO: “Our judges must start holding police officers and prison wardens accountable for cases like this. There is clearly a level of corruption at play here, and it is obvious that someone in the police force has compromised the integrity of this case. This country is a mess.”
@Asiwajuson23: “There was a viral video by Parara where it was claimed that some inmates, in collaboration with corrupt prison guards, were allowed to leave the prison at night to commit crimes and then return before morning. If that is what happened in this case, then things are worse than we imagined.”
@ajeskenzy: “The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has a major role to play in protecting innocent citizens. Many people are wrongly arrested and framed for crimes they know nothing about. The legal system should not be used to swap real criminals with innocent individuals. Lawyers must demand accountability from the police.”
