The immediate past Inspector-General of Police (I-G), retired Mr Usman Baba, expressed in Abuja on Wednesday that upon his appointment in 2021, he left the Nigeria Police Force in a better state than he initially encountered it. He confidently stated that his leadership has contributed to the improvement of policing in Nigeria. The reins of authority were handed over to the newly-appointed Acting I-G, Mr Kayode Egbetokun.
Upon assuming the position, Baba had a clear vision and mission to positively transform the narratives surrounding policing in Nigeria. Furthermore, he aimed to reposition special detachments within the Force, such as the Marine and Air wings, Special Forces, Police Mobile Force, Counterterrorism Unit, and Special Protection Unit. Baba also focused on strengthening the intelligence capacity of the Force through upgrading the Technical Intelligence assets with the Cam Scanner technology.
Baba expressed his conviction that significant progress has been made in all aspects of his agenda to reform the police and restore its prominent role within the country's internal security architecture. Although there is still work to be done, he emphasized that a strong foundation has been laid and substantial strides have been taken. He urged the new leadership to leverage these accomplishments in their pursuit of a better Police Force.

In response, Acting I-G Egbetokun expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for the confidence placed in him. He considered his appointment as a call to commitment and an opportunity to make a difference in the shared mission of safeguarding the lives and well-being of Nigerians. Egbetokun pledged to lead the Nigeria Police Force with a focus on excellence, transparency, and accountability to rebuild public trust. His administration aims to restore public confidence in law enforcement institutions and create a secure Nigeria where every citizen feels safe, protected, and respected. He further pledged to introduce new tactics that harness the great potential of the Nigeria Police in securing the country, fostering lasting peace, and realizing the president's vision.
