The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has offered his deepest condolences to the government and people of Niger State following the tragic tanker explosion that occurred on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at Dikko Junction, along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway.
In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, the IGP expressed his heartfelt sympathies to the families of the victims and the entire community. The incident, which involved a truck carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), led to a devastating explosion after the vehicle lost control and caught fire. Tragically, more than 73 lives were lost, many others were injured, and numerous shops and properties were destroyed in the blaze.
The IGP stressed the urgent need for all road users to adhere strictly to road safety regulations to avoid further tragic incidents. He emphasized that negligence and the frequent violation of traffic laws are often the main causes of catastrophic accidents like this one, which result in loss of lives and damage to property.
In light of this devastating event, IGP Egbetokun issued a stern directive to the State Commissioners of Police to fortify their Motor Traffic Divisions (MTDs) and work closely with traffic management agencies. This collaboration aims to ensure the rigorous enforcement of traffic rules and the establishment of safety measures on the nation's highways to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The IGP also urged vehicle owners and drivers to take extra precautions to ensure that their vehicles are in good condition and comply with all traffic regulations. He underscored the importance of responsible driving and regular vehicle maintenance in avoiding accidents that could have tragic consequences.
While offering prayers for the souls of those who tragically lost their lives in the explosion, IGP Egbetokun called on all stakeholders, including transport operators, law enforcement agencies, and the general public, to prioritize road safety. He urged them to act responsibly in their duties and personal conduct to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
