Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North Senatorial District, has publicly expressed his anticipation for a second installment of former Military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida’s (IBB) autobiography. The senator believes that a follow-up to Babangida’s book would shed even more light on key historical events and undisclosed truths about Nigeria’s political past.

According to reports, IBB’s book, A Journey In Service, made waves after the former Head of State confirmed that the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola had indeed won the June 12, 1993, presidential election. This election was later annulled under his administration, a decision that has remained a controversial chapter in Nigeria’s history.

In a statement shared on his 𝕏 handle, Senator Kalu emphasized the importance of giving MKO Abiola greater recognition as a former President. He stressed that beyond the symbolic honors previously bestowed upon Abiola, further measures should be taken to officially acknowledge his status in Nigeria’s presidential history.

The senator wrote: “Congratulations to former President Ibrahim Babangida on the launch of his book, which, among other things, provided a platform for an open declaration and validation of the sanctity of the June 12, 1993, presidential election won by Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola (MKO). We still await the Part 2 of this book, where more truths will be revealed.”

“My vivid recollection of the mindset and motivation of MKO is that he was driven by humanity and a deep love for the people. For this reason, a major requirement for a classical hero like him is not just immortalization but proper and formal recognition, which should include his rightful position in Nigeria’s Hall of Fame.”

Kalu acknowledged the efforts of past administrations, particularly former President Muhammadu Buhari, in recognizing June 12 as Nigeria’s official Democracy Day. He noted that the 8th National Assembly had passed an Act, signed into law by Buhari, formally recognizing the date as a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey. Additionally, Buhari conferred the highest national honor, GCFR, upon Abiola, further cementing his legacy.

The senator, however, believes more can be done. In his post, he made a direct appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to take the final step in granting full recognition to MKO Abiola as a former Nigerian President. Specifically, Kalu suggested that Abiola’s portrait should be placed alongside those of past and present Nigerian leaders in the country’s presidential lineup.

“I am now appealing to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to crown the existing honor with MKO Abiola’s portrait in the lineup of past and current Presidents. I believe this is the right thing to do for redemption, justice, and fairness. May Nigeria know peace, experience prosperity, healing, and lasting unity,” he added.

Kalu’s statement has sparked reactions from Nigerians, with many taking to social media to share their thoughts on the matter. Some commended his call for further recognition of Abiola, while others debated the implications of officially listing him as a former President despite the annulment of his election.

As conversations around the June 12 election continue, many await the potential release of a second part of IBB’s autobiography, hoping it will provide deeper insights into one of Nigeria’s most defining political moments.
