The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has taken decisive action by ordering the arrest of the organizers responsible for a charity event that tragically claimed the lives of 32 children. The heartbreaking incident has sent shockwaves across the state, prompting swift measures from the government to ensure accountability.
Governor Makinde made this announcement in a statement issued shortly after the tragic stampede at Islamic High School, Basorun, Ibadan, on Wednesday. The governor expressed his profound sorrow over the incident and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring justice for the victims and their families.
Reports revealed that the tragedy occurred at Islamic High School Basorun, the venue of a charity event organized for families. The event, hosted by a radio station owned by a prominent broadcaster, had promised gifts and rewards for attendees, leading to an overwhelming turnout. The large crowd resulted in a chaotic rush, culminating in the devastating stampede.
During the commotion, many children were reportedly trampled, with numerous casualties reported. The injured were immediately rushed to the University of Ibadan College Hospital (UCH), where medical personnel worked tirelessly to save lives. Unfortunately, several children were pronounced dead upon arrival, leaving families and the entire community in mourning.
Governor Makinde disclosed that investigations have commenced to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. He assured the public that all individuals involved in the planning and execution of the event would face justice. He emphasized that no stone would be left unturned in the quest for accountability.
In his statement, Governor Makinde said, “This is a very sad day for us here in Oyo State. We sympathise with the parents whose joy has suddenly been turned to mourning due to these tragic deaths. My heart goes out to every family and individual affected by this incident.”

I want to reassure our people that anyone directly or remotely involved in this disaster will be held accountable.
