The Federal Government has officially launched an emergency helpline, 112, as part of its efforts to combat the rising cases of kidnapping and other security threats across Nigeria.

The toll-free emergency number is designed to enable Nigerians to swiftly report cases of kidnappings, suspicious activities, and other criminal incidents to the relevant security agencies for immediate intervention.

This initiative was announced by the National Coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), Major General Adamu Laka, during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday. The briefing focused on the ongoing efforts of the Multi-Agency Anti-Kidnap Fusion Cell, operating under the Office of the National Security Adviser.

Speaking at the event, Major General Laka emphasized the significance of this new measure, stating:

“The Nigerian Communications Commission has facilitated an emergency response number, 112. The NCTC calls on all Nigerians to report suspicious activities, crimes, and kidnappings by calling the toll-free number 112, including the Multi-Agency Anti-Kidnap Fusion Cell’s designated numbers that will be provided to the public.”

He further acknowledged that kidnapping for ransom remains a critical security challenge in the country, requiring a coordinated and sustained effort from both government agencies and the general public.

“While significant progress was achieved in 2024, sustained commitment and innovative approaches are imperative to mitigate the menace in 2025,” he added.

Security experts and concerned citizens have welcomed the introduction of the helpline, seeing it as a crucial step toward enhancing Nigeria’s security response framework. Many believe that the effectiveness of the initiative will depend on swift response times, inter-agency collaboration, and widespread public awareness.

Authorities urge Nigerians to utilize the helpline responsibly and avoid making prank calls, as such actions could obstruct genuine emergency cases and delay urgent interventions.

As kidnapping cases continue to pose a threat in various parts of the country, the Federal Government has assured the public that more proactive measures are being implemented to curb the menace and enhance national security.
