The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared December 25 and 26, 2024, as public holidays to mark the celebration of Christmas and Boxing Day, as well as January 1, 2025, for the commemoration of New Year’s Day. This declaration was made public through a statement that was signed by Magdalene Ajani, acting on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in his message, extended heartfelt Christmas and New Year greetings to all Nigerians, urging them to embrace the core themes of love, peace, and unity that are associated with the holiday season. Tunji-Ojo emphasized that the Christmas season serves as an ideal opportunity for both spiritual reflection and national renewal, reminding Nigerians of the significance of these holidays not just as celebrations, but as moments to come together in unity.

“The Christmas season is a good moment for both spiritual reflection and national renewal. As we celebrate the birth of Jesus, the Prince of Peace, let us demonstrate kindness and extend goodwill to one another, irrespective of our differences,” Tunji-Ojo stated, highlighting the need for peace and understanding among all Nigerians.

Furthermore, the minister pointed out that this festive period is an excellent time to strengthen family and community ties, which he noted are essential to fostering a sense of belonging and cooperation within society. He emphasized that such unity plays a crucial role in the nation’s development and overall progress. The message encourages all citizens to not only focus on individual celebrations but to also think about how their actions can positively impact the larger society.

As the preparations for the holiday festivities gain momentum across the country, the Federal Government also encouraged Nigerians to take full advantage of the public holidays to reflect on their personal values, reconcile any differences they may have, and renew their commitment to the shared goal of building a more united, prosperous, and peaceful society. This call to action aligns with the broader vision of fostering a culture of understanding and collaboration, which is seen as integral to the nation’s future success.
