President Bola Tinubu, in response to widespread public concern, has mandated the immediate release of all detained minors facing prosecution due to their participation in the recent #EndBadGovernance protests.

In his directive, Tinubu underscored the importance of safeguarding the rights of these young citizens while upholding the rule of law. He emphasized that any further legal procedures involving the minors should prioritize their welfare and human rights.

The announcement was conveyed in a formal statement released on Monday by Bayo Onanuga, who serves as the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. In addition to directing the Attorney General of the Federation to expedite the release of the minors, Tinubu also instructed the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction to ensure that the minors' welfare needs are adequately addressed.

This information was shared by Onanuga on his official X handle, further outlining the president's compassionate approach towards handling the sensitive issue.

The statement included, “President Bola Tinubu has ordered the Attorney General to take all necessary steps to secure the immediate release of minors detained by the Nigeria Police in connection with recent protests, ensuring that ongoing legal processes do not infringe upon their rights.”

Furthermore, the President has tasked the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs with organizing the safe return of the minors to their families, while initiating an inquiry into the circumstances that led to the extended detention of these young individuals.

The issue gained considerable attention after last week's arraignment of the minors, during which bail was set at an exorbitant rate. Approximately 67 minors were granted bail by Justice Obiora Egwuatu with an individual bail requirement of N10 million. This decision was met with criticism from the public, who questioned the accessibility and fairness of the legal system for young Nigerians.

The incident has led many to reflect on the nature of the judicial system, particularly in cases where minors face legal action for expressing their right to protest. Tinubu’s directive represents a step towards addressing these concerns, with a focus on both legal reform and humanitarian considerations.

In light of this, critics have called for broader judicial reforms to ensure minors and young adults are treated equitably within the legal framework, with Tinubu’s move being seen as a possible catalyst for such changes.
