This move follows shortly after the arrest of Ifeanyi Okowa, the former governor of Delta State and the vice-presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general elections. Okowa's arrest was related to allegations of mismanagement of campaign funds during the election cycle.

According to reports, the EFCC's investigation is primarily centered on the NNPP’s presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso. Sources suggest that the inquiry may be part of a broader strategy to weaken Kwankwaso’s political influence, especially as he gears up for a potential run in the 2027 presidential elections. These developments have raised concerns about possible political motivations behind the EFCC’s actions, with some speculating that the move is intended to target Kwankwaso in advance of future campaigns.

Rabiu Kwankwaso

A source revealed to Daily Nigerian that the EFCC has been instructed to immediately open a case file against Kwankwaso. This could lead to an invitation for him to answer questions regarding the allegations of campaign fund mismanagement, which reportedly stem from disgruntled elements within the NNPP who have since been expelled from the party. The source further suggested that the EFCC might take more aggressive action, including possibly laying siege to Kwankwaso, in response to these allegations.

In a twist to the investigation, back in June, Justice Yusuf Ubale Mohammed of the Kano State High Court had issued a court order barring the EFCC from taking any action against Kwankwaso regarding these specific allegations. Despite this, there are indications that the EFCC might disregard the court ruling due to alleged “pressure from above,” raising concerns about the independence of judicial decisions in the country.

The renewed focus on Kwankwaso appears to be linked to his recent public comments, which many perceive as critical of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s supposed political ambitions in the North. At a convocation ceremony at Skyline University in Kano, Kwankwaso remarked on the alleged power struggles in the region, stating, “Lagos would not allow Kano to appoint its own emir.” These remarks have sparked debate and could be fueling tensions between Kwankwaso and the current administration.

Political analysts have also pointed to Kwankwaso’s increasing political influence, particularly following the lavish wedding of his daughter in Kano. The wedding drew a large number of opposition leaders, many of whom remained in the city for more than 48 hours, engaging in extensive meetings and discussions with Kwankwaso. This event further underscores his growing stature within the Nigerian political landscape, which may explain the heightened scrutiny he is now facing.
