A drunk driver has reportedly killed four soldiers and injured 32 others in Lagos, causing widespread shock and concern.
The 81 Division of the Nigerian Army confirmed the tragic incident in an official statement signed by the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 81 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Ayeni.
According to the statement, the incident occurred on Friday morning when the driver lost control and plowed into a group of soldiers who were engaged in their routine physical training near Myoung Barracks in Shomolu, Lagos.
Reports indicate that the vehicle was occupied by three young men, who are suspected to be internet fraudsters. Following the tragic crash, one of the occupants managed to escape from the scene, while the remaining two were swiftly apprehended by authorities.
The Nigerian Army has confirmed that the bodies of the deceased soldiers have been deposited in the mortuary, while the 32 injured soldiers are currently receiving urgent medical care at the 68 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Yaba, Lagos.
Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Ayeni assured the public that despite the devastating loss, the Division remains steadfast in its commitment to military training and operational readiness. He emphasized that the Army will continue to carry out its duties with unwavering dedication.
“The Division remains resolute in its responsibility to ensure security and maintain its readiness to discharge its duties, even in the face of such a tragic event,” he stated.
“Furthermore, this painful loss will not weaken the Division’s commitment to safeguarding lives and properties within its Area of Operations, in strict accordance with the Nigerian Army’s constitutional mandate,” he added.
