In a significant move, the Federal Government has announced the renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University, in honor of the esteemed elder statesman, General Yakubu Gowon. The decision was revealed through a statement made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, on Monday.
According to the minister, the renaming decision is part of the Federal Executive Council's (FEC) efforts to honor General Gowon for his significant contributions to the nation. However, Idris clarified that the official name change will require legislative action and must be processed by the National Assembly. He explained, βThe third item is that there is also a decision taken by the Federal Executive Council, FEC to rename the University of Abuja to honor elder statesman, General Yakubu Gowon.β
The statement further emphasized that the University of Abuja will henceforth be referred to as Yakubu Gowon University. The final approval for this name change will depend on the National Assembly, which will handle the necessary legislative procedures for the amendment.
Idris also took the opportunity to inform the public that the Federal Executive Council will be going on recess from the 18th of December, 2024, to the 6th of January, 2025.
