The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU) in Bauchi has officially declared an indefinite strike in response to the university administration's failure to address their concerns regarding working conditions. The decision was made after an emergency congress held at the Yuli Campus in Bauchi, where members of the union gathered to discuss the ongoing issues with the university management.

The SAZU ASUU Chairperson, Comrade Awwal Hussain Nuhu, spoke to the press after the congress and confirmed that the union had explored all available options for negotiation. Despite numerous attempts to engage with both the university administration and the government, the union found no satisfactory resolution or willingness from the authorities to address their concerns.

Comrade Awwal Hussain Nuhu explained the frustration of the union, stating that there was a continued lack of commitment from the university management, which prompted the motion for a strike action. He stated, “A member of the union moved a motion for the branch to embark on a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike action, which was seconded by another member.” This motion was passed, and the decision was made to begin the strike immediately.

The strike commenced at 12:00pm on Friday, 29th November 2024. The union has directed all its members at SAZU to fully comply with the strike action, meaning that no academic activities, including teaching, meetings, accreditation, and other academic staff-related duties, will take place until further notice.

The union has emphasized that this is a total and indefinite strike, which will continue until the demands for better working conditions are addressed. Members have been instructed to suspend all academic responsibilities, including marking, classes, and any other academic engagements. The statement concludes by urging all members to uphold the resolution for a comprehensive strike, highlighting the seriousness of the situation and the union's commitment to ensuring that their grievances are addressed by the authorities.
