Reports indicate that Governor Mohammed voiced his concerns during a courtesy visit from members of the Christian community in Bauchi State, who came to the Government House as part of their traditional annual Christmas homage. The Governor used the occasion to highlight what he perceives as the inequities and potential dangers inherent in the reforms.

Governor Mohammed expressed apprehension that the tax reforms appear to disproportionately favor certain regions of the country while putting the North at a disadvantage. He stressed the importance of fairness and inclusivity in policy formulation, calling on the Federal Government to reevaluate its approach to ensure it serves the interests of all Nigerians.

He said, “We are currently facing serious challenges in this country. Hunger and suffering are widespread among the masses. This tax reform policy is not only anti-North but also a direct threat to the unity and cohesion of our nation.

“The Federal Government must prioritize listening to the people. In a democracy, governance must be rooted in the welfare and consent of the populace. Policies cannot be imposed arbitrarily without considering their impact on the everyday lives of citizens.

“Failure to address the cries of the people could result in widespread unrest and instability. The North, in particular, is struggling under the weight of these reforms. How can we effectively manage public services, pay workers, and build infrastructure when our revenue sources are being curtailed? This situation is unacceptable.

“No leader should ever feel too proud or inflexible to admit when a policy is flawed. Effective leadership involves making adjustments when necessary to reflect the will of the people. This issue transcends religion and ethnicity; it is fundamentally about justice, fairness, and preserving the unity of Nigeria.”

Addressing the Christian community directly, Governor Mohammed expressed his deep appreciation for their unwavering support over the years. He said, “I am immensely grateful to my Christian brothers and sisters who have stood by me throughout my political journey, even during my early days with the ANPP. You believed in me despite my imperfections, and for that, I am deeply thankful.

“Whatever support I provide for you, it is because you have earned it and truly deserve it.”
