Unoma Akpabio, wife of Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has publicly come to her husband's defense, dismissing the allegations of sexual harassment made by Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
The controversy began when Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of denying her certain privileges as a senator due to her rejection of his alleged sexual advances. This accusation quickly gained traction, leading to widespread debates and discussions across both political and social media circles.
Speaking on Arise TV on Friday, Unoma Akpabio condemned the allegations, calling them “unfortunate and demeaning” to her family. She emphasized that her husband, throughout his long and successful political career, had always been surrounded by women but had never been involved in any misconduct or accusations of this nature. Unoma expressed confusion over where these allegations were coming from, stating that she had known both the accuser and her husband well before their marriage. According to Unoma, the two were very good friends before the marriage, and she finds it difficult to understand why such an accusation would arise. She added that these types of issues are usually resolved within families and should not be made public without first addressing them privately.
Unoma further pointed out the absurdity of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s husband allowing such claims to surface without first discussing and resolving the matter within their own household. Although the Senate President has yet to release an official statement on the matter, Unoma’s remarks strongly suggest that legal action may be pursued to challenge the accusations. Unoma has expressed her desire to clear her husband’s name and protect her family from the damage these false claims may cause.
