The World Health Organisation, WHO, has called on President Donald Trump to reconsider his decision to withdraw the United States from the organisation, highlighting the significant implications such a move could have on global health efforts.
In a statement released on Tuesday, WHO stressed the importance of its role in safeguarding global health, including the health of American citizens. The organisation reiterated its commitment to addressing the underlying causes of diseases, strengthening health systems worldwide, and responding effectively to health emergencies, especially in regions where few others can operate.
WHO expressed deep regret over the announcement and pointed out the vital contributions of the United States to its initiatives over the years. The organisation underscored the value of American participation in shaping global health policies and programs, citing numerous joint successes. These include the eradication of smallpox, near-eradication of polio, and advancements in combating various health threats globally.
“The United States was a founding member of WHO in 1948 and has consistently played an active role in shaping and governing WHO’s work alongside 193 other Member States. Together, we have achieved remarkable milestones, saving countless lives and protecting people from severe health threats. American institutions have been both major contributors to and beneficiaries of WHO membership,” the statement read.
The organisation further emphasised that collaborative efforts between the United States and WHO have historically been instrumental in tackling pandemics, improving vaccine access, and ensuring equitable healthcare delivery across the globe.
It can be recalled that on Monday, President Trump signed an executive order directing the United States to withdraw from the World Health Organisation. This decision comes amid tensions over the organisation's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and concerns raised by the US administration about the fairness of its funding model.
Speaking at the White House shortly after the decision, President Trump criticised WHO, asserting that the United States was contributing significantly more funds than China. He accused the organisation of bias and inefficiency, stating, “World Health ripped us off.”
The withdrawal has sparked widespread reactions, with health experts and policymakers warning about the potential negative impact on global health initiatives and the fight against pandemics. WHO has urged reconsideration, stressing that unity and collaboration are crucial for addressing shared health challenges in an increasingly interconnected world.
