President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to participate in the 19th Heads of State and Government Summit of the Group of 20 (G20), also known as the G20 Summit.
The President touched down on Monday at exactly 3:03 a.m. Nigerian time, where he was warmly received by Ambassador Breno Costa from the Ministry of External Relations of Brazil. His arrival signals Nigeria's active engagement in global matters of socio-economic, environmental, and diplomatic significance.
President Tinubu’s agenda at the summit includes scheduled bilateral meetings with key world leaders, aimed at fostering cooperation and advancing Nigeria’s socio-economic reforms. These meetings are set to address critical areas, including economic partnerships and global governance reform strategies.
The 2024 G20 Summit is being hosted by Brazilian President Lula da Silva, who has presided over the group's rotating presidency since December 21, 2023. President Lula’s leadership tenure is scheduled to conclude on November 30, 2024.
The summit, under the theme “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,” focuses on achieving sustainable development through economic, social, and environmental dimensions. The event also prioritizes the reform of global governance structures and aims to address pressing global challenges such as climate change and the principles of the digital economy.
Additionally, the Brazilian presidency has listed the Israel–Hamas war and the escalating geopolitical tensions between the United States and China as priority topics during the summit. These issues are expected to dominate discussions, alongside other global initiatives aimed at fostering international peace and cooperation.
The summit will conclude with the formal presentation of the outcomes and agreements negotiated throughout the year under Brazil's presidency. Heads of state and government will deliberate on these outcomes and endorse new strategies to address emerging global issues effectively.
President Tinubu’s delegation to the G20 Summit includes notable members such as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar; the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha; the Minister of Art, Tourism, Culture and Creativity, Hannatu Musawa; and other distinguished ministers from the Federal Executive Council.
This high-profile participation underscores Nigeria’s commitment to playing a proactive role in addressing global challenges and shaping policies that drive sustainable development.
