Indian lawmaker and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) member, MLA Gurpreet Gogi, has tragically passed away after accidentally shooting himself, resulting in fatal head injuries.
The incident took place late Friday night, as confirmed by his family. Gogi was immediately rushed to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital in Ludhiana, where medical staff declared him dead upon arrival.
The Punjab Police have officially verified the incident, which they have described as an apparent accident. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Jaskaran Singh Teja stated, “According to family members, Gurpreet Gogi accidentally shot himself, sustaining a bullet wound to the head. He was declared dead at the hospital, and his body is currently in the mortuary at DMC Hospital.”
A post-mortem examination is expected to provide further clarity on the cause of death. “The post-mortem report will clarify the exact cause of death,” added the DCP. Meanwhile, investigations are continuing to uncover the complete details of the tragic incident.
Gogi, who joined the AAP in 2022, made a significant impact on Punjab’s political landscape after defeating two-time Congress MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu in the Ludhiana assembly elections. His sudden passing has left a considerable void in the region's political arena, as tributes pour in from both colleagues and constituents, mourning his untimely demise.
This tragedy mirrors a similar incident from 2019, when Carl Robinson, a candidate for the Mississippi state legislature, fatally shot his wife before taking his own life, highlighting the devastating consequences of such tragic events.
