Popular Nigerian actor and content creator Yemi Elesho has shared a nostalgic story about his long-standing relationship with Grammy-winning singer Asake, reminiscing on their humble beginnings during their university days. In a recent interview with streamer Jigan, Elesho opened up about how he and Asake worked together before fame, recalling how he used to compensate the singer with food and drinks for featuring in his movie projects.
Elesho revealed that their friendship dates back to their undergraduate years at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife. He explained that Asake frequently appeared in his cinematography projects on campus, performing various roles to support his content creation efforts. However, since they were both students at the time and financial resources were limited, Elesho compensated Asake in the form of food rather than money.
“I used to give Asake a ₦700 plate of rice and a bottle of Coca-Cola as performance fees for him to feature in movies during our undergraduate days at OAU,” Elesho humorously recounted during the interview.
He further described Asake as a “day-one friend,” emphasizing the deep connection they have maintained over the years and the shared memories they created together at the university. He fondly recalled the various activities they engaged in as students, including playing football together during celebrity matches organized on campus.
“He is my very good friend. I have pictures and videos of our time together at OAU. We used to play celebrity football matches together back in the day,” Elesho added, highlighting the bond they formed long before Asake rose to stardom in the music industry.
Elesho also mentioned that their circle of friends during those days included several other prominent entertainers who have now made names for themselves in the Nigerian entertainment industry. Some of these individuals include celebrity MC Yhemolee, content creator Jimi Agbaje, comedian Woli Arole, rapper Blaqbones, and others, all of whom shared similar struggles and aspirations before achieving success.
The heartwarming revelation about Asake’s past sparked reactions online, with many fans appreciating the humble beginnings of these celebrities and how their friendships have remained intact despite their rise to fame. Others found Elesho’s recollection amusing, particularly the fact that Asake once accepted food as payment for his acting roles before transitioning into a global music star.
