Nollywood actress and media personality, Toke Makinwa, has openly discussed her renewed desire to give marriage another chance, even as she embraces life at 40. Known for her candid personality and inspiring journey, Makinwa delved into her thoughts on relationships, love, and the institution of marriage in a heartfelt interview.
In a recent podcast hosted by British-Nigerian presenter Madame Joyce, the 40-year-old star reflected on her past experiences while expressing optimism about finding the right partner. Despite the complexities she has faced, Makinwa described marriage as a “beautiful institution” that holds great promise when entered with the right person.
Notably, Makinwa was previously married to businessman Maje Ayida. The pair tied the knot in 2014, but their union ended in 2017 amid a highly publicized breakup that sparked widespread media attention. Reflecting on her first marriage, Makinwa revealed the highs and lows of her journey, acknowledging the lessons she has learned over the years.
“Marriage is not easy, but when done with the right person, it’s one of the most beautiful things,” she said during the podcast. Makinwa spoke fondly about her willingness to embrace love again, drawing parallels between marriage and sibling relationships. She humorously described the initial excitement and eventual challenges of living closely with someone, likening it to sharing a home with family.
Toke Makinwa on her intention to remarry
“People always think I hate men or that I’m a feminist who bashes men. I’ve been married before, and I still believe marriage is one of the most beautiful institutions,” Makinwa clarified during the interview. She elaborated on her personal experiences, sharing how marriage can oscillate between joy and frustration. “There were days when I would rush home to tell my ex-husband everything I had been through. And there were days when I woke up in the morning, thinking, ‘God, you must hate me for me to marry this idiot.’”
Despite her past challenges, Makinwa reaffirmed her belief in love and her desire to try again. “It didn’t work out many years ago, but I still fancy the institution. I do want to get married again. It hasn’t happened yet, but I’m not ruling it out. I am just taking my time,” she explained. Makinwa emphasized patience and faith in divine timing, jokingly adding, “Whenever he [God] is ready, I just hope I am not wrinkled [laughs].”
