Veteran musician, Timi Dakolo shared a nostalgic story about how he met his wife, Busola, recalling how she once felt embarrassed by his car, a branded Picanto he had won from the inaugural season of Idols West Africa in 2007. The singer, known for his hit song “Iyawo mi,” spoke about his early attempts to win her over, detailing how their relationship developed over time.
The couple first crossed paths at church, where Timi made an initial romantic approach by asking Busola to be his date for a ball. However, she was not initially receptive and didn’t pick up his calls after sharing her phone number with him. Timi, determined to win her heart, continued to visit the area in hopes of running into her again. One day, they met, and when Timi confronted her about not answering his calls, she explained that her phone had been stolen.
Despite the rocky start, they became friends, and Timi’s feelings for her grew stronger. However, Busola was keen on keeping their relationship platonic and trying to friend-zone him. But Timi, unwilling to give up, continued his pursuit, even going as far as offering to take her to work every day. Yet, there was one thing that embarrassed her: Timi’s branded Picanto. According to Timi, Busola would feel uncomfortable when he picked her up in the car, which was a symbol of his victory from winning the Nigerian Idols contest. Timi, undeterred by her feelings, assured her that he would prove her wrong and do something that would shock her.
Timi went on to marry Busola in 2012, and together, they’ve been blessed with three beautiful children. Their love story, from the challenges they faced to their eventual union, continues to inspire many. Timi’s reflections on their journey provide a glimpse into the determination and love that has shaped their relationship.
