Talented Nigerian singer, Tems, has achieved a groundbreaking milestone as she becomes the first female African artist to have a song surpass 1 billion streams on Spotify.
Tems reached this historic feat with her globally successful collaboration, “Wait For U,” featuring American rap icons Future and Drake. The track, which was released in 2022, has now crossed the remarkable 1 billion streams mark on Spotify, solidifying her influence in the global music industry.
“Wait For U” is built around a sample from Tems’ 2020 song “Higher,” which was part of her critically acclaimed EP “For Broken Ears.” The hit single made waves across the music industry, debuting at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. This achievement marked a historic moment, as Tems became the first African artist to have a song launch at the top of the prestigious chart.
Beyond commercial success, the song has also received immense recognition within the music industry. “Wait For U” earned two Grammy nominations and ultimately won the award for Best Melodic Rap Performance at the prestigious Grammy Awards.
Tems’ journey in the global music space continues to break barriers, as she recently secured another major win at the 67th Grammys. She took home her second Grammy Award in the newly introduced Best African Music Performance category for her hit single “Love Me JeJe.” This latest win further cements her position as one of Africa’s most successful and internationally recognized artists.
