Political commentator, Reno Omokri has reacted strongly to Davido’s recent statement in which the singer described Nigeria's economy as being in shambles, during an appearance on a podcast. Omokri voiced his disagreement with Davido’s perspective, claiming that the country’s economy is not as dire as the singer described it. The comments from Davido, which sparked debate, came after he addressed issues regarding Nigerians living abroad and the state of the nation’s economy, especially in the wake of Donald Trump’s victory. According to Davido, there is very little left in Nigeria due to the economic challenges the country faces, suggesting a bleak outlook for the nation’s financial future.
In the podcast, Davido remarked that individuals residing in America should return to Africa, particularly Nigeria, citing the economic situation as one of the key reasons behind the country’s struggles. His statement caught the attention of many on social media and political commentators, including Reno Omokri, who did not hesitate to voice his opinion on the matter. Omokri took to his Instagram page, expressing his belief that Davido’s characterization of Nigeria's economy was misplaced and lacked a sense of patriotism. He asserted that if Nigeria’s economy were truly in such a shambles, it would be impossible for artists like Wizkid to achieve such impressive feats in the music industry.
Reno Omokri.Omokri used Wizkid’s recent album, which garnered millions of streams on platforms like Spotify, as an example to counter Davido’s claims. He explained that streaming services like Spotify require disposable income, and if Nigeria's economy were truly as devastated as Davido claimed, it would not be possible for people to afford streaming services, let alone break records. Reno also pointed out that other countries with struggling economies, such as Venezuela or Argentina, do not see artists breaking streaming records, thus making it illogical to label Nigeria’s economy as “in shambles.”
In his detailed post, Omokri questioned why Davido did not take inspiration from other global stars like Rihanna, who consistently uses her platform to promote her home country, Barbados, positively. He commended Rihanna for never speaking ill of her country and for using her fame to enhance Barbados' global standing. Omokri suggested that had Davido adopted a similar approach, he could have achieved even greater success, like Wizkid, who continues to break records within Nigeria and internationally.
Reno’s remarks also pointed to what he perceived as a lack of commitment to Nigeria, particularly from someone like Davido, whose uncle, Senator Ademola Adeleke, is the governor of Osun State. Omokri argued that while Davido may have US citizenship, it was inappropriate for him to denigrate Nigeria, especially while speaking to an international audience. He further remarked that if Davido was referring to the economic challenges in Osun State, where local minimum wages have been slow to increase, then he should have specified that, rather than generalizing the state of the entire nation's economy.
Omokri concluded his post by urging Davido to reconsider his public statements and learn from other global figures who have used their platforms to uplift their countries. He expressed disappointment in the singer’s comments, urging him to reflect on the impact of his words, particularly given his high profile and the influence he holds in both Nigeria and abroad.
Davido. In response to the growing discussions surrounding the issue, the post quickly went viral, attracting a wide range of reactions from followers and fans on social media. Many praised Reno for his insightful take, while others expressed their own views on Davido’s comments, sparking a lively debate about the country’s economic condition and how public figures should navigate their influence when speaking about national issues.
