Veteran Nollywood actor, Patrick Doyle, has criticized Nigerian men who choose to propose to their girlfriends in public, calling the act "imbecilic" and unnecessary.
The actor expressed his disapproval of the growing trend of public proposals, stating that asking a woman to marry you is a deeply intimate moment that should be kept private rather than turned into a public spectacle.
Patrick Doyle believes that the current practice of hiring photographers, videographers, and organizing elaborate events just to propose is not only excessive but also reflects a larger problem of narcissism and attention-seeking behavior in modern society.
In his opinion, such proposals have become more about seeking validation from social media rather than about genuine love and commitment between two people.

‘’Asking a woman to marry you is perhaps the most intimate experience any two persons can share outside of actual copulation. This should be a personal, heartfelt moment shared in privacy, not turned into a dramatic public display.’’
He continued, ‘’This new unwholesome trend of having an entourage on hand with video cameras live streaming the act is, in my view, imbecilic. It completely takes away from the sincerity of the moment and turns it into a performance for an audience rather than an expression of true love and commitment.”
Patrick Doyle also lamented the increasing culture of social media approval, stating, “The epidemic of narcissism and approval addiction consuming many people today makes me wonder if some individuals ever had any home training at all. Everything has become about views, likes, and shares rather than genuine human connection.”
