During a recent episode of the ‘In My Opinion’ podcast, Phyno revealed that although he initially started his music career rapping in English, he eventually transitioned to rapping in Igbo to create a unique identity and represent his culture on the international stage.

Phyno discussing his music journey.

The artist explained that his upbringing in an Igbo-speaking environment played a significant role in shaping his music style. He also shared how he was heavily influenced by Western hip-hop legends such as Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, 2Pac, and The Notorious B.I.G. Despite this, Phyno eventually realized the importance of offering something distinct to the music scene.

In his words, Phyno said, “Growing up, I listened to emcees that were very lyrical like the Busta Rhymes, the Jay-Zs, the 2Pacs, the Biggies, and the rest. I had that Western influence in my music. At that point, I was rapping in English just like every other person trying to make a name in the industry.

“But then, I reached a stage where I had to define my identity and build a career. I asked myself a critical question: ‘What am I going to sell to the world? If I go to the UK, will I sell English to them? They own English language.’ If I go to America right now, I am selling Igbo to them. That’s what makes me different. I can’t come to your country and offer what you already have. But if I sell what you don’t have, it makes me unique and intriguing to the audience.”

Phyno further emphasized that his roots in a highlife-influenced neighborhood also contributed to his style. He ensures that elements of traditional Igbo music and culture are integrated into his artistry. “I grew up in a highlife-influenced neighborhood. I make sure that I incorporate all the influences into my music and art,” he explained.

Additionally, the artist has embraced wearing Igbo traditional attire as part of his identity, stating, “I have started wearing the Igbo traditional attire because I have to look different, I have to represent my culture.”

Through his music and appearance, Phyno continues to represent his heritage while offering a fresh and authentic sound that resonates with fans worldwide.
