In a recent update shared on his official Facebook page, the lawyer disclosed that the divorce case between May and Yul had reached the stage of a Compulsory Conference, which is a mandatory requirement for both parties under Nigerian family law. This legal procedure is an essential step in the divorce process, requiring the couple and their respective legal representatives to convene for discussions aimed at reaching a possible agreement on key disputed issues.

According to Ugwuonye, the Compulsory Conference, also known as a Mandatory Conference, is a crucial aspect of family law procedures in Nigeria. It serves as an opportunity for both spouses, along with their legal teams, to deliberate on the matters surrounding their divorce and attempt to settle some, if not all, of the issues before the court. The goal of the conference is to encourage amicable resolutions that may potentially reduce the number of contested issues that will proceed to trial.

Providing further clarity on this legal requirement, he explained that the discussions in such a conference could lead to agreements on various aspects, including the division of marital assets, child custody, financial settlements, and other crucial matters. Any agreements reached during the conference would be formally documented and submitted to the court in a report. However, if the parties fail to come to a consensus, the court may order them to reconvene and make further attempts at negotiation before proceeding to trial.

The court held a scheduled hearing on the case today. The primary focus of the hearing was to review the report from the Compulsory Conference that had been ordered by the court in an earlier proceeding. This report is crucial as it determines whether the parties have managed to resolve any of their disputes or whether the case will proceed to a full trial.

For those unfamiliar with this aspect of Nigerian family law, a Compulsory Conference or Mandatory Conference is a legal step that must be taken before a divorce trial. When a couple files for divorce, the court requires them to engage in discussions facilitated by their legal teams in an attempt to reach mutual agreements on various issues. The outcome of these discussions is then reported back to the court. If some agreements are reached, they are officially documented and considered by the court. However, if no agreement is reached, the court may ask the parties to engage in further talks or proceed with the trial process.

During the last hearing, both parties informed the court that they had not yet submitted their report from the Compulsory Conference, indicating that their discussions had not led to a conclusive agreement. As a result, the court granted them additional time to finalize the report. The focus of today’s hearing was to assess the progress made in this regard.

Following today’s hearing, it was revealed that there were still unresolved discrepancies between the parties, making it difficult to reach a final agreement. Due to this, the court has extended the timeline for further discussions, allowing them to hold another conference virtually in an attempt to settle at least some of the disputed issues. The next hearing has been scheduled for March, by which time the court expects to receive a report indicating whether any agreements have been reached or if the case will proceed to trial without resolution.

Ugwuonye emphasized that this update is meant to provide an objective summary of the current state of the case and is not intended to favor any particular side. He also clarified that this information is being shared to prevent misinformation and unnecessary speculation regarding the legal proceedings.

He further noted that the involvement of Judy Austin in the case is due to the allegations of adultery brought against her. According to the legal filings, she is accused of engaging in a romantic relationship with Yul Edochie while knowing that he was still legally married to May Edochie. Additionally, she is alleged to have falsely claimed to be legally married to him despite the fact that Nigerian law does not permit Yul to enter into a second marriage while still legally bound to his first wife.

The legal battle is expected to continue in the coming months, with the next hearing set to determine whether the parties have been able to reach any form of agreement or if the case will move forward to a full trial.

Thank you.”
