A Nigerian man has shared a shocking and distressing story of how he was unexpectedly arrested and sentenced to a year in prison because of a pair of slippers. This unusual and unfortunate incident has sparked public outrage after the man revealed the full details of his experience in a viral video circulating on X (formerly Twitter). In the video, the man recounts how an innocent night out with a friend turned into a legal nightmare that led to his imprisonment for a seemingly minor offense.
The incident occurred on January 6, 2024, when the man, after finishing his work for the day, was invited by a friend to a birthday party. After attending the party, the two friends set off for home, but their journey took an unexpected turn when the man's fuel ran out. With no other option, the two men headed towards a nearby house where a woman sold fuel. They purchased the fuel and were on their way, but trouble arose when the man's friend, who had a torn pair of slippers, decided not to inform him. Instead, the friend took a pair of slippers that belonged to the woman’s son, which had been left outside, and began walking away with them.
Unbeknownst to them, the woman noticed the missing slippers and immediately accused them of theft. In a state of panic, she began calling for help, and her husband quickly contacted the police. The authorities arrived at the scene and arrested both men. They were taken into police custody, where they spent three days, assuming the situation would be resolved as a minor misunderstanding. However, to their shock and dismay, the case escalated, and they were both sentenced to prison time for what started as a simple slip-up.
Recounting his harrowing experience in the video, the man explained the series of events that led to his arrest and eventual imprisonment. He said:
“I drive Keke. On January 6, 2024, I closed from work, and a friend invited me to a birthday party. So, I carried him there.”
“On our way back, my fuel finished, so I asked my friend to follow me to buy some from a woman in the area.”
“After buying the fuel, my friend’s slippers got damaged, but he didn’t tell me. He just took the slippers at the front of the house, which belonged to the woman’s son.”
“As we were leaving, the woman called us back and realized what happened. I apologized, but she refused to listen and started calling us thieves.”
“I stayed back, begging and explaining that it wasn’t intentional while cautioning my friend. But before I knew it, her husband called the police, and we were arrested.”
“We spent three days at the station, thinking it was a small matter, only to end up in prison.”
