Popular Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo has expressed regret over her advocacy for the exhumation of late singer Mohbad’s body, citing the ongoing controversies and prolonged delays surrounding his reburial as reasons for her change of heart.
Mohbad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Aloba, tragically passed away under controversial circumstances on September 12, 2023, and was buried the next day. Following public outcry and concerns surrounding his death, his body was exhumed by the Lagos State Police for an autopsy on September 21, 2023, to determine the cause of his untimely demise.
Speaking during her appearance on the Talk to B podcast, hosted by Biola Bayo, Iyabo Ojo opened up about her initial intentions and how the subsequent turn of events left her disheartened. The actress disclosed that she had hoped the autopsy would provide answers and justice for the late singer’s family and fans. However, the process has been overshadowed by internal family disputes and legal wranglings.
“I wouldn’t have requested that Mohbad be exhumed if I knew his case would turn out this way,” she revealed. “He hasn’t been buried till now. His dad says he wants a DNA test done, and I heard the court has granted his request. But I also heard his dad has conditions again.”
Iyabo explained that her advocacy stemmed from a desire to uncover the truth behind Mohbad’s mysterious death, which had left many unanswered questions. Her aim was to ensure justice was served and accountability established.
The ongoing delays in Mohbad’s reburial have been compounded by the family’s feud, especially the demand for a DNA test on Mohbad’s son, Liam, by the singer’s father, Joseph Aloba. The DNA request has sparked widespread criticism and added another layer of complexity to an already tense situation.
“I did my best to ensure that everyone was investigated, but when they came up with different theories, DNA became more important to them,” Iyabo lamented. She expressed disappointment over the lack of resolution and how the case has shifted focus from seeking justice to settling family disputes.
The family disagreement deepened further in October 2023 when Mohbad’s father reportedly insisted that the singer would not be reburied until a DNA test confirmed Liam’s paternity. This stance has not only prolonged the burial process but has also left fans and supporters frustrated and calling for a dignified resolution to honour the late singer’s memory.
While Iyabo Ojo has remained vocal about her commitment to seeking justice for Mohbad, she now regrets the unintended consequences of her initial call for an autopsy and hopes for a swift resolution to bring closure to the case.
