The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has summoned Subomi and Wahab, the sons of billionaire businessman Razaq Okoya, for questioning regarding accusations of naira abuse.
The summons, issued by Michael Wetkas, the acting director of the EFCC’s Lagos office, calls on the brothers to appear at the commission’s office at 15A Awolowo Road at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 13, 2025, to answer questions concerning their involvement in the controversial incident. The investigation stems from a viral video that has garnered widespread attention and criticism across social media platforms.
The controversy erupted after a promotional video for a new song showed the Okoya brothers alongside a police officer who was holding stacks of N1,000 notes. The video quickly went viral, sparking a significant backlash, with many accusing the brothers of engaging in activities that were seen as abusive to the naira, the Nigerian currency. Many Nigerians expressed their displeasure on social media, demanding that those responsible be held accountable for their actions. The controversial nature of the video led to public outrage, with many calling for swift action from the authorities.

Adejobi condemned the officer’s conduct, calling it unethical, and assured the public that the officer would face appropriate disciplinary measures. In a statement posted on X, Adejobi said, “The policeman captured in the recent viral video shared by the sons of Lagos businessman, Chief Okoya, where they were abusing the naira, has been identified and detained for disciplinary action. The involvement of the policeman has been condemned as it’s unethical. We will always strive hard to uphold the sanctity, credibility, and core values of the police.”
Following Adejobi’s statement, there was a surge of public outcry on social media, with many Nigerians demanding that the Okoya brothers also face consequences for their part in the naira abuse. The video, which many viewed as disrespectful and irresponsible, sparked calls for greater accountability. Social media influencer VeryDarkMan also joined the chorus of voices calling for justice, releasing a video where he urged the police to act against the Okoya brothers, emphasizing the need for equal justice. He expressed his belief that no one, regardless of their status, should be above the law and that those involved in the naira abuse should be held accountable.
