Reality TV star and media personality, Doyin David, has stirred discussions online with her latest statement on financial preparedness before marriage. According to Doyin, a woman should have at least 5 to 10 million Naira saved up before considering marriage.
Doyin shared this perspective during an episode of her podcast, “Doyin’s Corner,” where she had an engaging conversation with fellow reality star Chizzy. She emphasized the importance of financial independence for women, arguing that a substantial personal savings account ensures stability in case of unforeseen circumstances in marriage.
In her explanation, Doyin cited her own family’s experience, revealing how her mother was able to take over all financial responsibilities after her father’s passing because she had savings and a stable career. She noted that despite her father's wealth, it took time to access his funds after his death, and during that period, her mother’s financial readiness ensured their family remained comfortable.
“At whatever level you are, you need to save up some money. For example, after my dad died, he left a lot of money. I never got to do anything. Up till now, I don’t even take public transport. I don’t know how to do all these house chores because of how I was brought up,” Doyin said.
She further stressed that financial security is crucial for women to avoid being in vulnerable situations, adding that marriage should not be seen as a financial escape but rather a partnership where both individuals are self-sufficient.
“Assuming my mother didn’t have money saved up, what would have happened? Because it took a while to access my dad’s money after his death. I didn’t feel the absence of my dad until years later because my mum took over the responsibilities,” she added.
Doyin’s comments have since sparked diverse reactions on social media, with some agreeing with her stance on financial stability and others questioning the practicality of expecting young women to save millions before marriage.
