Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has stirred discussions on governance and democracy in Nigeria with his recent comments. The award-winning artist expressed his view that true democracy is absent in Nigeria, contrasting it with the democratic system in the United States.
During a guest appearance on The Morning Hustle podcast, Davido spoke candidly about his admiration for the democratic structure in the U.S., describing it as a system that allows for transparency and fairness, elements he believes are lacking in his home country.
The singer revealed that despite voting for Kamala Harris of the Democratic Party during the U.S. elections, he still congratulated Donald Trump on his victory.
“I congratulated Donald Trump. That’s the president! What are you talking about? If I were running against him, I would still have congratulated him,” Davido said.
“What I like about America is that there’s true democracy. Where I come from [Nigeria], it’s not so,” he added.
The Unavailable hitmaker also shared his reason for supporting Kamala Harris, stating, “To be honest, I voted for Kamala Harris because I wanted to see the first female president in my generation. That would have been cool.”
Davido’s remarks have sparked debates online, with fans and political observers discussing his take on democracy and Nigeria’s political system.
