Nigerian businessman and socialite, Pascal Okechukwu, popularly known as Cubana Chiefpriest, has joined the growing chorus of appeals for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). His plea comes as part of a broader call for unity and peace in the South East region of Nigeria, which has experienced significant unrest since Kanu’s arrest.
This development follows the plea made by former Imo State Governor and Senator Rochas Okorocha during a valedictory session in the Senate to honor the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah. Okorocha urged Senate President Godswill Akpabio to facilitate the release of Kanu as a step toward reconciliation and stability in the region.
Sharing a clip of Okorocha’s Senate address on his Instagram page, Cubana Chiefpriest added his voice to the call. He expressed deep concern about the plight of the Igbo community, highlighting how Kanu’s incarceration has left many unable to visit their ancestral homes due to insecurity. Chiefpriest emphasized the emotional and socio-economic toll the unrest has taken on the region, citing the loss of lives and properties as a pressing concern.
In his heartfelt post, Cubana Chiefpriest wrote: “@senator_akpabio Those Plea From Owelle Ndi Igbo Is All We Ask For Our Dear Inlaw, Let OHAMADIKE Ndi Igbo, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu Come Back Home Soon. It’s Almost Five Years Now We All Have Not Had Access To Our Home Town. Only His Release Can Restore Peace Back In Our Region. We Have Lost So Much Lives & Properties; We Need To Build Back SouthEast ASAP. Make Una Help Us.”
The call for Kanu’s release comes amid escalating insecurity in the South East, which many attribute to his detention and the political tensions surrounding it. Since his arrest in June 2021, the IPOB leader has faced a series of legal battles, with charges related to treason and other allegations being brought against him. These proceedings have not only captured national and international attention but have also deepened divisions within the region.
Observers note that addressing Kanu’s detention could be a pivotal step in restoring peace to the South East. The atmosphere of fear and violence has heightened in recent years, with communities yearning for stability and a return to normalcy. For many, Kanu’s release is seen as a pathway to healing, reconciliation, and rebuilding in the troubled region.
As the situation unfolds, voices like those of Rochas Okorocha and Cubana Chiefpriest continue to resonate, underscoring the urgency of dialogue and resolution to end the prolonged unrest.
