Popular Nollywood actress, Chioma Akpotha, has once again fallen victim to an attack by political thugs while trying to exercise her right to vote in the Nigerian elections. In a recent incident, the Nollywood actress had arrived at her polling unit and was attempting to record the proceedings with her phone when the thugs approached her with knives and bottles.
This led to a frantic escape by Chioma and those present in her car, which was vandalized by the angry mob.
It is not the first time that Chioma Akpotha has faced an attack from political thugs during elections. During the presidential elections, the actress was also attacked, and this has led to her being more cautious during subsequent voting exercises. In the aftermath of the most recent attack, the actress took to her Instagram page to raise the alarm about the threat to her life and the dangerous situation at polling units in Nigeria.
Chioma Akpotha recounted the incident, saying, "Today is just the worse I couldn’t even being out my phone to record or to say I am at my polling unit. As I brought out my phone, this guy’s attacked me with knives and bottles, I had to run out. They destroyed my side mirrors, hit my car. I don’t even know the damage done to my car cause I ran out for my life.”
A video of the incident was also shared on Twitter, which has sparked outrage and condemnation from Nigerians who are concerned about the safety of citizens during elections. As the country prepares for more elections in the coming years, there is a growing need to address the issue of political thuggery and ensure that voters are protected and allowed to exercise their franchise without fear of intimidation or harm.
