Veteran musician and political commentator, Charly Boy, has publicly announced his decision to withdraw respect for Nobel Laureate Prof Wole Soyinka.
In response to the renaming of the National Arts Theatre in Lagos after Soyinka, a move initiated by President Bola Tinubu to honor the playwright on his 90th birthday, Charly Boy expressed strong disapproval.
On his X handle, Charly Boy criticized the decision, stating:
“Mighty have fallen, for beans”
He continued, “Uncle WOLE I henceforth withdraw all the respect I once had for you.
“When late Jimmyjohnson talked about you in the 90s, I thought he was only yabbing you.
“Wow! How some of our MIGHTYs have fallen, for beans, ewa, dodo, is it for rice’?”
The announcement sparked a range of reactions, including:
@diplosoft commented: “Who needs the respect of a 70-year-old man with 'boy' in his name? 🤣🤣”
@tonyajah remarked: “GEJ once named University of Lagos (Unilag) after Moshood Abiola University, and it didn’t work.
I see the same thing being repeated here. What people know is National Theatre, and that’s settles it.”
@Nairaexchanger added: “When they are gone, we will correct all the madness.”
@seyialli responded: “You talk too much.
Nobody regard you or any of your word.
Find somewhere to look for your daily bread as show might not come for Agulu gbajue!”
