Bobrisky's legal representative has filed an appeal urging the court to replace the crossdresser’s six-month sentence with a penalty of a ₦50,000 fine for each charge. The controversial figure, Idris Okuneye, known as Bobrisky, lodged a notice of appeal on Monday, contesting the verdict issued by a Federal High Court in Lagos. Okuneye faced charges from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) related to naira abuse and pleaded guilty before Justice A.O. Awogboro. On April 12, Justice Awogboro sentenced Okuneye to six months in jail without the option of a fine, emphasizing the need to deter others from misusing and defacing the naira. However, Okuneye's attorney, Bimbo Kusanu, has appealed to the Court of Appeal to nullify the maximum sentence and replace it with an option of a ₦50,000 fine for each charge. In the appeal notification, Kusanu argues that the trial court imposed an excessively harsh sentence on Bobrisky, who had no prior criminal convictions. He points out that under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), there are alternatives for a lesser sentence. Kusanu contends that the sentence against Okuneye was overly punitive and contrary to the mandatory provisions of the ACJA. He asserts that the trial court overlooked Okuneye’s positive background and swift cooperation during legal proceedings, such as promptly pleading guilty and responding promptly to the EFCC‘s summons. Kusanu argues that the trial court did not exercise its judicial discretion appropriately, resulting in a miscarriage of justice against the appellant.
