Nigerian doctor, Chinonso Egemba, widely recognized as Aproko Doctor, has expressed deep concern over the appalling state of health centers in the country.
In a heartfelt video shared on Monday, the health advocate exposed the deteriorating and deplorable conditions of primary healthcare centers, which are supposed to serve as the foundation of medical services for citizens in Nigeria.
Aproko Doctor highlighted the dire state of these centers, emphasizing how unsafe they are for women during childbirth. He pointed out that instead of providing a sanctuary for mothers and their newborns, these facilities have become a major risk factor, endangering their lives.
In his observations, he also criticized the lack of proper medical supplies and equipment needed to ensure safe and effective deliveries. He called attention to the struggles faced by the staff, sharing that workers in some centers revealed they have to resort to using the torch lights from their phones when women come to deliver at night due to the absence of electricity.
He did not hold back in his plea to the government, urging them to prioritize the rehabilitation of these crucial facilities, which should form the cornerstone of the nation's healthcare system. Aproko Doctor underscored that in countries with serious healthcare systems, primary healthcare centers serve as the first level of medical intervention for the public.
He passionately stated, “Our leaders can and must do better. The primary health care centers are the bedrock of our healthcare system, and neglecting them puts the lives of countless Nigerians at risk.
“This is not just a doctor’s problem; it’s a Nigerian problem. We all have a role to play in demanding for better healthcare services in this country.”
The video has sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians joining his call for action and echoing the need for immediate reform to address the failing healthcare infrastructure.
